Trunk System Changes

Latest Addition To ITS

Watch for additional Digipeaters to be installed

  Automatic Position Reporting System
               Digipeater Report

        Nanaimo Amateur Radio Association
               February 08, 2007

APRS digipeater VE7NA was installed and enabled at the Nanaimo Amateur Radio Association repeater site on Saturday, February 03,2007. The digi is assigned the tactical call NADIGI which is the call sign appearing on APRS maps and within any raw packet data handled by the digipeater. The installation was completed by Grant, VA7GH, with the assistance of Dick, VA7AA, and Bruce, VE7BSM.

NADIGI consists of a Kantronics KPC3 tnc, Kenwood TM-201A transceiver,  a Toshiba laptop, and a 3 element yagi.  NADIGI is an intelligent digipeater and conforms to the current APRS specifications for digipeaters of this type. Digipeating  is accomplished by utilizing DIGINED software. The operating frequency is 144.390 mhz. The total system is powered by 12 volts DC making it independent of the AC grid. Ownership of the digi is held jointly by VA7GH and VE7NA for control and maintenance purposes.

APRS provides the means to track radio mobile movements as well as messaging, weather alerts, and data transfers. APRS can be a valuable asset if and when disaster strikes. It should be part of any committed emergency response by the radio amateur community. NADIGI will become a strong link in NARAs emergency preparedness. It will also be a vital link in extending APRS coverage further north along Vancouver Island and the Sunshine Coast.
